It is important to provide alternative modalities for expression, both to the level the playing field among learners and to allow the learner to appropriately (or easily) express knowledge, ideas and concepts in the learning environment.

Opportunities as We Position Students to Create Content

  • Students are more likely to share creative/alternative assignments with others - encourages students to take pride in their work
  • Students can explore real context where language is used - real world connections
  • Students can develop skills that helps them to be proactive and effective citizens - e.g., podcasts with Vietnam veterans - gives people a voice
  • When kids have more loose parameters, they can be more self-motivated - more likely to remember the information that they discover for themselves
  • A test can be very artificial - if we give them assignments where they can use their knowledge in an authentic way, they might transfer it to their own lives
  • School can crush the creativity out of kids - one way to bring creative thinking back into school - knowledge can be fun and interesting
  • Can help level the playing field in terms of building their skills related to technology
  • Can help level the playing field in terms of those students who have difficulty expressing themselves in traditional formats

Challenges as We Position Students to Create Content

  • It's not necessary to do things with and/or post them online to be meaningful experiences - The reading from the parent creates an artificial dichotomy
  • Technology use is not necessarily more creative than more traditional approaches - can actually introduce constraints
  • Students may not learn what they need to learn
  • Be flexible in terms of technology use - don't get fixated on certain kinds of tools are experience - be responsive to your context and students' learning needs/preferences
  • Group work is often less efficient in terms of class time compared with lecture
  • Challenge of assessing student learning
  • Don't focus too much on aesthetics, focus on content
  • Students are used to strict parameters and convergent learning experiences - this may be uncomfortable for some students

    • Wordle - create visual images from a piece of text - visual to find themes in a particular piece of writing
    • Eco Defenders - design an alien invasive species and let it run amok
    • Smithsonian Museum of Natrual History - 3D online exhibits

  • Focus on curriculum - how does it connect

  • Use easy to access tools (no logins)
  • User friendly tools - focus on the learning rather than the procedures of the tools
  • Age appropriate resources (concept level, language level, look and feel)
  • Right level of "fun" - not so many bells and whistles that it distracts
  • Appropriate level of scaffolding - if it scaffolds too much, they may not be doing the work they're capable of
